Liberal Democrats are committed to tackling violence against women and girls.

I was a legal aid solicitor at a practice in Chatham that fought for the victims of domestic violence. So I know from first-hand experience that the background of these cases is complex: victims need help and perpetrators need not just punishment, but guidance to overcome their problem.

Sexual violence is a disease and a curse. It does need to be controlled by criminal penalties. However, at its root are social and psychological problems that span the generations.

It is time that we stop sweeping them under the carpet and spend time with those involved to address and eradicate them for good.
