I fully support the recently announced (26/02/21) investigation by House of Commons Transport Select Committee into safety and the future of Smart Motorways
Smart Motorways are motorways without a hard shoulder. They were introduced as a way of increasing motorway capacity at minimal cost. The idea was to use technology to overcome safety concerns.
However, there have been a number of cases where there have been fatal collisions after cars had broken down on a smart motorway and their drivers were waiting for assistance.
I believe that motorway traffic increases with the ability of a motorway to take more vehicles.

Put simply: traffic will always expand to fill the space provided.
So we need to find smarter ways to travel than using smart motorways.
I would be in favour of exploring solutions to reduce motorway use through our county and promote safer travel.
