Liberal Democrats believe in placing a far higher priority on encouraging walking and cycling.

We believe the benefits for both health and the environment are clear.

Cycleways are routes that link communities, businesses and destinations across a region in one cycle network. They provide safe cycling and give potential cyclists confidence to use a bike for their journey.

In London, they have been proven to work well: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/routes-and-maps/cycleways

As a keen cyclist, I support a cycleways scheme for Kent.

The major reason why people do not use cycles is fear of motorcars and lorries, but this can be mitigated in several ways:

  • Integrated networks of properly designated cycle lanes and off-road cycle paths. Connecting existing or extending cycle lanes where practical to do so.
  • Priority signals for pedestrians and cyclists at traffic lights.
  • Promotion of cycle to work and cycle to school & college schemes with charging facilities for electric bikes and secure cycle storage areas.
